I am using it right now and I don't find it too bad. It would take a
bit of getting used to if you aren't used to using an OSX-style doc
and menus, but I dont find it slower to use. I actually prefer the
extra screen real estate and I find moving my mouse to the edge of the
screen to launch or focus any of my applications quite intuitive. I of
course added my most commonly used applications to the sidebar so I
could easily launch them without sifting through menus. I also like
the search feature for launching applications, since I often forget
which of the gnome menus an application is in.

Unity also handles switching between multiple and single monitors much
better than classic gnome (in classic, if you add a panel to your
second screen so you can have a taskbar for windows on that screen, as
soon as you unplug the screen that extra panel moves to the first
screen. in Unity, it handles it all for you and you dont even need to
add the extra panel to start with). I like this feature because I have
a laptop which has an extra monitor attached at work, but not at home.

I havn't tried the new gnome 3 shell though, although reports on the
internet say people like it better than Unity, so you could give that
a try
