Re: Ubuntu Migration + Off topic [MEPIS]

Hello list - longtime lurker, first time poster. Im Allen in South Park. 


Ive been using Ubuntu on my desktop workstation with out much problem 
since warty was released.  I now run the dev build "Hoary Hedgehog." 
Everything has been pretty easy so far.  Ive been running Debian 
desktops and servers for a long time and Ubuntu/Gnome2.8 is the only 
distro that persuaded to give up my debian/fluxbox desktop environment. 
  My DVD writer, external firewire storage devices, usb camera 
connection and other devices that caused me headaches in debian have 
gone over without a hitch in Ubuntu.  My biggest frustration is python 
development as I have run into multiple problems in the dev releases 
with python dependencies and packages.  Installation is a breeze, 
hardware detection is splendid, and the package selection out of the box 
is nice.  And Gnome2.8 is sweet, IMHO.

And now, a bit off topic, but just keeping up with the thread discussion 
...

As far as MEPIS goes...  Ive always been interested in the project but 
Im never really in a hurry to give up a fully functioning workstation to 
go through the rigors of setting up something entirely new and hoping 
that it will work like what I had.  Of course I am very curious, and 
even excited that there is such thing as a "local" distro here in 
Morgantown - who woulda thunk it?  But alas - Ubuntu is the only thing 
that made me give up what I had working with Debian and now that I have 
had Ubuntu running flawlessly for the past 6 or 7 months I am in no 
hurry to rebuild a working desktop environment.

Maybe it would be a good topic for one of the group meetings (which Ive 
never attended) to have a representative of MEPIS come out and get 
people acquainted with it.  Id definitely try to attend something like 
that.  I just dont have the time or effort to partition my hdds and 
install 3 OS's and compare and contrast to find which I like.  Trust me 
- I miss those times!

To me the question here isnt "why arent Morgantown Linux users running 
MEPIS out of pride and support for their local project?"  Its more like 
"Why hasnt a local project put itself out there and made itself visible 
in the local linux users community and asked for testers, shown up at 
meetings, and promoted itself on resources such as mor-free and 
mor-lug?"  I know as a developer myself that one must take a pro-active 
approach. Maybe the first thing to do is to actually reach out to the 
community instead of asking why they didnt just adopt MEPIS 
automatically.   Im not criticizing by any means, and I certainly 
applaud the effort it takes to actually start to build your own linux 
desktop OS.
