fire fox/ie

Hey I just went to new student orientation, i got a mix account.  I hear that they will not support firefox (or other web browsers besides ie)  I have heard that there is a plugin that will make the server think firefox is ie.  or there is some place you set a setting.  Could someone tell me how to do this.  My computer runs linux so i have to use firefox (and absolutly do not trust ie).
