[root@hp pcmcia]# /sbin/iwconfig
lo        no wireless extensions.

eth0      no wireless extensions.

sit0      no wireless extensions.

I also just tried a suggestion described at
http://lists.pcxperience.com/pipermail/linuxr3000/2004-November/004035.html

and after changing /etc/pcmcia/config.opts  I ran [root@hp misc]# 
/etc/init.d/pcmcia restart
Shutting down PCMCIA services: ERROR: Module ds is in use
ERROR: Module pcmcia_core is in use by ds,yenta_socket
done.
Starting PCMCIA services: cardmgr[4512]: watching 2 sockets
done.

Nothing changed after that: for example, iwconfig showed the same output 
as before.
