I think I sussed it. The drive came with a 40-wire IDE cable, which is what I 
was using in every case. Maybe not the *same* cable, but still 40-wire. The 
BIOS on this box would complain at boot that it wasn't an 80-wire cable.

I replaced that cable with an 80-wire cable, and haven't had a bad burn yet, 
albeit I've only burned 3 discs since then. I've got my 8x back! :D
