Hi everyone, I think the open format worked surprisingly well too. We should probably try to organize more formalized talks for the future (especially if the idea is not only to support but to evangelize for free softare to newbies--and I think it ought to be), but it seems that in the absence of a planned talk we can still have a meeting using the "Open Format". There's no need to cancel a meeting just because we don't have a planned talk, especially since last time seemed so reasonably productive. After all, having a ready group of people to ask "that thing you always wondered" about Linux seems to me what LUGs are for in the first place, no? I'll be happy to bring an armful of Linux reference books to look things up in case one of us doesn't know the answer. However, for future planning, why doesn't everyone on the list who might be willing to give a talk in future submit some topics that they'd like to present on and then we can work from there. (Just send them to the list.) Perhaps you Craig (or the club secretary) would be willing to compile whatever submissions we get by the meeting this Wedesday (8pm, Monongahela Room, Mountainlair) and we can discuss those at the meeting in addition to our general desultory discussion of all things Linux. I'll start things going by proposing a few I'd be willing to perhaps do: Audacity and/or podcasting, Free software philosophy and history vs. open-source, MySQL, PHP, Subversion, the Jargon file and hacker culture, GNUCash, or perhaps sometime down the road Ruby on Rails. I'm no expert on these, but I have a passing acquaintance and it might be fun/educational for me to learn enough to be able to give a talk. Don't feel you need to be a guru to give a talk on something. I always find the best way to learn something is to prepare to teach it to someone else. So, in that spirit, who else wants to step up and offer to do a little talk (whether for future meetings or even this week) on something they know?
