I find the performance hit by VB on a modern desktop system with CPU virtualisation to be negligible. VB Rocks, just dump vmware into /dev/null. Well that's until VB gets Larried... I can't be bothered forking out for a doze license though. 2) CPUs are 0.001*$CURRENCY a dozen. Therefore just select ones that work, and ditch the rubbish that doesn't, like Renesas, MSP430 and Microchip[1]. Volker [1] The only Microchip worth looking at are the PIC32MX with a supported gcc toolchain. No acceptable C runtime library though, the Microchip offering is a) license void if used on anything but Microchip, b) no modifications permitted. There is a very good PIC32 dev kit, but I am unsure about its debugging status and it does not come from Microchip.
