+1 for the T series. I also use a Lenovo T412 for work and love it to bits.
Works really well with Mint Linux but I actually use Puppy much more simply
for the sheer speed of the thing. I also resurrected an old IBM 600 (Intel
P2 and 256mb ram) using Ubuntu 9.04 and XFCE only last week and it still ran
like a champ and was absolutely usable. The design difference between my
T412 and the old 600 seemed from the outside at least to be limited to the
wide screen. After all if it ain't broke don't fix it and Lenovo seemed to
have nailed it at least for their professional range. The same cant be said
of Ubuntu. 9.04 - 11.04 anyone?
