In my unison profile, I've got "follow" directives handling that.

You put in a line like this:

follow =3D XXX expression

XXX is an identifier for selecting an expression. I'm using "Path" for
an expression being a direct path name, "Name" for any wild car
constructs as you would use them on the command line on steroids (like
"*.bak" or "{,.}*{.log}") and "Regex" to take a regular expression (like
".*\.svn/.*").
