Google for 'Atheros AR9285 ubuntu' suggests blacklisting acer-wmi will
fix it.

Kubuntu (or Ubuntu) doesn't support dial-up out of the box.  You can't
use networkmanager either.  For Kubuntu install & use kppp or wvdial
(Ubuntu).

You'll probably need to get the modem working first - which might be
a problem.
