VFAT filesystems don't carry any user or group ownership or permissions
metadata the way a real Unix/Linux-native filesystem would, and that
makes things quite difficult.  You may try your luck with the UMSDOS
filesystem, which overlays the extra metadata on a (V)FAT filesystem,
but from what I remember it's painfully slow compared to a real Linux
native FS, and it has some problems with files created on Windows (been
a long, long time since I've actually used it though).  Frankly, I think
the performance issues (which are quite grave from what I remember) make
this not worth doing.
