I am fervently suggesting that you try "LIVE" CDs before installing GNU/Linux.
With LIVE CDs, you can just
1. Put the LIVE CD into your CD/DVD Drive
2. VOILA! After booting up using the LIVE CD, you will have a working GNU/Linux
system!  (NOTE: The system is slower because of CD/DVD access speed)

You can just feel it out first. No installation needed and your
current hard drive is not touched (unless you intend to).
Once you made a choice, there is usually a way install your GNU/Linux
system on the hard disk (may dual-boot with other OSes like
Windows, DOS, GNU/Linux, etc.)

Some of the recommended live CDs are:
(1) Ubuntu; (2) Kubuntu; (3) Mandriva (formerly Mandrake); (4) PC Linux OS;
(5) Slax; (6) Peanut; (7) Knoppix; (8) SuSe; (9) Symphony OS
