Not that I have incurred in that many kernel software related problems 
but I always thought they weren't going to be that helpful to *me*.

Mostly every time I thought to connect a serial cable to my server was 
to control early boot stages, just in case there are some problems with 
grub to avoid to get to the next room.

But now both kind of events happens so rarely I've forgot about my proposal.

I've run out of unused serial cables but next amazon order will include 
one, $3 don't seem that much to learn something.
