A call for Mentors

Hello All,

I am happy to announce that Korean American Community Services is planning to begin an free A+ certification program for at risk young people ages 14-21. The program is set to commence on August 15th 2002.  The first class will consist of 8 students. The students will make a commitment to the program for one year, during which time they who will receive 100 hours of training from certified instructors, as well as referrals for remedial instruction and other social services if needed. After their training ,students will be placed as interns with non profits agencies in Chicago for 4 months as help desk and general IT trouble-shooters. Finally, we hope to secure young people of working age, paid employment with local companies.

How does this relate to the people on this list? Well.... we are looking for people interested in mentoring a young person for a year (and longer if you choose to continue the relationship). We want the mentor to be someone in the IT industry: someone who likes challenges and young people. Someone  who can give a young person a hands on feel for what jobs in IT are like, and how people act and work in such an atmosphere. We are asking volunteer mentors to commit to at least two face to face meetings per month for the year, as well as periodic and continuing contact via email. 

People who are interested in mentoring will have to submit to a background check, as well as constant pats on the back from all your admirers, and a pervasive sense of self worth. :)
