I would add Alfresco to your list of systems to evaluate.

More of a collaboration/document management system than e-mail - similar 
in functionality to Sharepoint.

Consider Google Apps for e-mail and calendaring. Consider too the 
headache of dealing with spam or long-term archiving on your own system 
as opposed to letting someone like Google or Postini (now owned by 
Google) handle it.
