IMAP question

Hello All, I am setting up IMAP to receive my emails from my tuffmail account. Right now I have getmailrc configured to do so via pop3. However, the messages stay on the tuffmail server after getmail has downloaded them. I am trying to figure out how to prevent this and am wondering if I need to switch to IMAP? tuffmail has an imap server and I have the settings, but I don't want to go switching over getmailrc to the IMAP server if that's not the answer.
