I've been playing with a DD-WRT running Samba3 with a USB attached HDD.  I
was thinking I could go with this as a low energy file server.  But it seems
slow as a fileserver, so I got curious about network performance.  I decided
to run some tests.  I have it setup like:

|- 1. Win7 PC Gigabit adapter
|
|- 2. Win7 Laptop with Gigabit adapter
|
-- 3. TRENDnet TEG-S50G 10/100/1000Mbps GREENnet Switch
|
|
-- 4. TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND 802.11b/g/n Wireless N Gigabit Router
| running DD-WRT and USB HDD attached with Samba
|
|- 5.Ubuntu Samba + LAMP server with 10/100 adapter

So I moved some big files to different destinations (MB is really MB not Mb)

1. -> 1. = ~80 MB/s  (internal transfer between one HDD -> 2nd HDD in same
box)
1. -> 2. = ~50 MB/s  (move files between 2 gigabit adapted machines on the
same side of a Gb switch)
2. -> 1. = ~50 MB/s  (move files between 2 gigabit adapted machines on the
same side of a Gb switch)
1. -> 4. = ~5 MB/s   (move files to Samba on DD-WRT, which is a USB attached
HDD)
1. -> 5. = ~10 MB/s (move files to Samba on 100Mb attached fileserver)

So the DD-WRT is really a slow file server.  But I'm curious about the other
tests, and if these numbers are about what one would expect?
