Do you know how to use the system monitor? I don't remember what the
menu system is like in Ubuntu 10.04, but try Applications->System Tools.

Next time this happens, start the system monitor. In the Processes tab,
see what is using a lot of CPU (as in, close to 100%). If it is
something called nsplugin, flashplugin, or some variation, then Flash is
the problem. If it says something with Java, then blame Java. Either
way, you can kill it by right-clicking the process, and your Firefox
session should be fine. If it's Firefox itself, then you may want to
look at http://goo.gl/T7mn8
