Samba IS a clone of Microsofts SMB (Server Message Block) protocol to 
allow Windows machines to talk(read/write) to Linux shares. So it is in 
effect Windows filesharing running under Linux.
Things have changed a little with Windows 2000 et-al, the protocol is 
now called CIFS (Common Internet FileSystem), it is basically Samba with 
addendum, so if you wish compatibility with newer Windows, then you will 
have to make sure the Samba Server is operating with both the SMB and 
CIFS modules active.
