The only time I had Linux crash on me regularly was when I had some bad 
memory.  Personally I've always used Memtest86 to test for memory problems, 
but that is hard to do remotely.  Perhaps you could try 'memtester' (from 
http://pyropus.ca/software/memtester/) instead?
