I don't know enough to help you fix it but what I've read seems to tell 
me that "permissions" can be a trap
You could prove it by logging in as "root" and see whether that makes 
any difference!
The purists will tell you that that's a security risk, how big a risk, I 
don't know I think  that it would be  reduced if the PC isn't conncted 
to a network while you attempt it!
