Well said Rick,

I can remember when first starting this journey, that I was always
inquiring about getting hardware to work, issues with networking and
USB, not to mention issues of partitioning.  Linux has come a very long
way in a very short time, and now the need to "configure by hand" is
gone, unless one has specific need for a lean-n-mean Linux machine.
Maybe the newbies are able to just load it it out of the box and enjoy
it.  I know I have not been breaking things for a while, although I
thought my computer was slowing down, so I loaded memtest86 - RAM OK.
Bought another HDD (haven't fitted it yet, but I got rid of Kat in my
KDE -- aaaah performance is back!  The KDE desktop search engine "kat"
runs in the background, and is a hog.  I could probably alter its "nice"
value but I am fairly organised in my data anyway.  kat is a bit tough
on a P3 with only 256Mb RAM, so I can do without it.

When I get the next machine with maybe more than a Gig of RAM I may
re-consider.

The Free Software Day this Saturday may solve your last point.
