I just wanted to say thanks for the effort that some of you went to try
to reply.  But the suggestions were for something that I had already
successfully completed.....

In the end  found a bit of software that does pcl2pdf (called that too)
which is going to cost my company circa $500 AUD.   I made a cups
backend out of it and it works a treat.  I was hoping for someone's
experience of using ghostscript or something like that as an
intermediate step to a PDF. =20
