TCO calculations can be tricky.  I find a well configured Linux 
server uses little of my time.  Interestingly, the least labour 
intensive system I administer is a hybrod Windows/Linux 
system.  Windows for AD, file storage and Windows dependent services, 
Linux for internal web servers and proxying - the latter drawing on 
Windows AD for its ACLs - this (virtual) box is literally a "hands 
off" system, it just runs, and all the information it needs is 
maintained by the office staff (user accounts) and automatically 
(Internet access permission).
