As always it comes down to your price / features / performance ratio.

I recently purchased a top of the line macbook pro and couldn't be happier -
by far the best laptop I have ever owned. Since OSX is based on BSD I still
feel quite at home on the command line and can run all my usual development
tools without hindrance. OSX comes with almost all the apps you require,
except for word processing - so you can just download open office and you're
pretty much there. OSX has iPhoto which is probably good enough for most
needs and is excellent at organising photos etc... and of course firefox is
available on OSX.
