freeze under heavy load

the sshd problem went away.
I never understood.

I was adding more services, like inetd and ftp....
and it looks like something fixed/changed some sort of configuration for
providing services.

Yes, the port was unused.
IPV6 was a possibility though.

********** Now it gets nastier

I'm trying to run a process which, among other things, uses
imagemagick "convert" to add an annotation to several THOUSAND
images, stored as .jpg.

The machine is locking up during this process.

I can make it fail fairly regularly when converting sets of files,
(roughly every 3000-8000 convert's)
but it varies.

I don't see anything obdvious in the logs (yet).
I wonder if it could happen when an outside machine
tries to mount or ftp to this filesystem while the converts
are running.

Is it possible that some sort of kernel buffer is just overflowing
under heavy load? Could the SATA disk just have hardware problems?
