Gentoo is great...if you have a lot of time on your hands and you don't
mind upgrades that can take days to finish.  As with Jonathan I've been
bitten by emerge (esp. when it came to gcc) in the past.  Thank goodness
for backup images. =)

I used to be a big gentoo person. Matthew is right, compiling can be a
pain in the arse.  I actually worked for an ISP at the time, and the
other users in the office, they were using some version of linux but
were rdesktop into a windows ts server.  So since they weren't using
their machines cpu cycles anyways, I loaded distcc and cc (a cross
compiler) to their boxes, and had a cluster setup for my gentoo laptop.
It made the process a little bit easier.  Not all packages were distcc
capable, but hey it did help out in the long run.  The major reason I
don't run gentoo now, although I've been thinking about going back to
it.  I want something that just installs and works, turnkey, like ubuntu
or fedora.  I don't really want to spend the time recompiling a kernel
when I get home from work.  And as far as package managers go, emerge is
great, but it has borked things up for me in the past.

Hi!

At the risk of throwing a monkey wrench into the works...
I don't see any activity reagarding gentoo on this UG. I've been running
it on multiple machines for several months and I'm quite impressed with
"emerge," gentoo's answer to "yum and other package managers. The
repositories are quite well stocked and I was really surprised when I
had to upgrade Perl to multithreaded for Apache mod_perl )one of those
mutliple dependency issues) - it went very well, without a hitch.
Any gentoo fans out there?
