The "turnkey install" aspect is a big attraction and is why I stayed so 
many years with Mandriva, which early on was superior in correctly 
detecting hardware and providing admin access to it on the desktop. 
However, Mandriva's semi-annual releases have failed me too often in 
trying to upgrade, leaving me with a mess.

So at the moment I've switched to Debian Etch 4.0 R3. Which is STILL not 
turnkey: install did not give an option for the "bigmem" kernel; the 
Nvidia driver required a separate download and compilation, and setting 
the default screen to 1080p (1920x1080) @ 120dpi took some research and 
modification of xorg.conf. Now I read on this list that there is a "new" 
Xorg release with incompatibilities; it never stops. But at least with 
Linux you can hack it yourself.
