Kelly: First remember that we are a mile up so the air is not as dense and its cooling capacity ain't as great as it is on sea level so its something to watch out for. One question to ask yourself is how long does it take to crash? Here booting the box into a test OS is the safest thing to do (linux on a live cd or dos will do). Is it faster if the box is warm than if it is cold? That's usually a very good indication that you have a heat issue. One way to handle this is not to start measuring temperatures but rather to really look at the box and see what's happening. Open up the box and blow out the dust bunnies then start it up. Watch the fans, all of them - those for the CPU, case, power supply, chipsets, and add on cards have all cause problems for me. Are they all spinning or is one of them turning slower than another? You can get some really crappy fans on expensive boxes these days so they are always suspect. Good luck and later - Michael Kelly Jones wrote: > How hot can 1U servers run, and where exactly do you take their temperature? > > Can you measure the heat of their power supply exhaust or something? > > I think we're running our servers too hot, but no one else believes > me, so I need some sort of evidence/proof. > > They hang frequently, but my cow-orkers blame demons and ghosts. > > _______________________________________________ NMLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.b9.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/nmlug
