MythTV HD and DRM

I'm thinking about building a MythTV system.  perhaps.
Digital TV is here, and the over the air HD quality is quite good.
Bit I'm finding it hard to understand what a modern MythTV system
will be able to do.

It seems that MythTV is not gaining popularity.  This scares me.
I know that a $300 tivo box will do much these days, but what I want
most from MythTV is the ability to have a server in a closet recording
shows, which can be played at any client on my LAN, anyplace in the house.
I have many LAN drops, and wireless, making this very convenient.

The problem is that I want a fairly good quality HD digital recording.
I'd like to avoid digital-to-analog-to-digital recording if possible.
There was some talk about DRM starting in 2005, which would disable the
ability for hardware to provide un-encrypted digital streams.

What happened with that?
Will I be able to record raw MPEG2 from digital-HD broadcast (over the air)?
Does Comcast encrypt their digital cable, so I will not be able to
use MythTV with it?  (How can I find out?)

I have heard some about "OpenCable" systems, which might allow PC
users to build cable DVRs.  But, they are unlikely to
support LINUX.  (I would guess there is an MS-only
key-exchange protocol)

There is some indication that only "Non-Basic" digital cable might
be encrypted.  Would that just be things like HBO, or might
any HDTV content be considered "Non-Basic".  I know that they
are still trying to find ways to charge more for HD content.

Any subscribers out there from New Mexico Software?
Are y'all still playing with MythTV distributions?

Any suggestions for Broadcast, Cable, or Firewire tuner cards?
(I hear that some Satellite and Cable boxes may provide digital
content by firewire)
