DTV PVR HD format ?

a friend has a PVR with a HD, he seems to think the device runs Linux,
and, the HD is a 'Linux HD';
he wants to transfer recorded material to DVD;
he removed the HD and tried to connect it to a linux system, but, as far
as he tells me, 'fdisk /dev/hdb' returned some error

if anyone is familiar with the PVR HDs, and, can offer some pointers on
mounting PVR HD in a PC...

I've googled a little and found his PVR run a Zoran ZR39161 hardware and
perhaps Nucleus+ os ?, but, haven't been able to find any info on hard
disk formats used

(fwiw, I suggested to get a TV card rather than doing HD shuffle...)
