I truly think you'd be surprised by how much RSS and it's ilk has made
inroads into "normal" life.

I did a talk last year at the Making Links conf (an event aimed at NGO's
and tech) on Podcasting (an RSS based idea) and the talk immediately
following mine was on RSS itself. My talk was reasonably well attended
(got to standing room only), but the RSS talk had so many people turn
up, they were flowing out the door.

With online readers like Google, people are using the RSS feeds without
realising it. All they see is an easy way to keep up with news and
articles on their favourite sites.

Regarding comments on blogs, I allow them on mine, however I've gone
both the spam checker and manual check route. That's my choice.
