Sure, it's not going to be a phone for everyone.  However, if you  
believe their figures, the claimed satisfaction rate is an insanely  
high 90%, with 80% of people using 10+ features on the phone.  So,  
statistically speaking, your friend's not the common case :).

I think a lot of the arguments for customer satisfaction with the the  
Mac applies to the iPhone pretty well.  Lots of people simply don't  
care about it, lots of people hate it due to emotional reasons or  
incorrect reasons, and lots of people don't care for it because it  
doesn't actually do the job as well as another platform does.  But  
there's no denying it's a success in many respects, and Apple really  
don't give a toss what the other crowd thinks.

I bet that'll change in a year, as more apps for the iPhone get  
developed.  The combination of the excellent iPhone development tools  
(and they really are excellent compared to all the other miserable  
mobile phone development tools), the willingness of the iPhone  
customer base willing to pay for software, and the App Store is going  
to be a big deal; perhaps revolutionary in the mobile phone space.
