When you plug in the cable do you get lights on the network adapter,  it
sometimes shines through the network plug itself.

So it is not hardware outside laptop.   The network driver, is it
installed correctly.  Have you tried to 'repair network connection'.
Should be at bottom right of screen.

I would add obligatory Linux is so much easier but I am having a fight
with network manager at present.
