thanks for your help
I think I've partially solved parts of the puzzle:

it seems whenever the phone links over BT, it then displays the 'GPRS data
connection' on the LCD screen, just tried it from a windoze system

the '3' changed few time to 'h', back and forth
maybe the phone is faulty, it also fails to authenticate when I try to
'update software'

I think I need to take it to a Telstra shop and try/compare

(as if it really mattered with bluetooth 1.1 being the bottleneck, anyhow)
