I think I have it largely worked out:

Motorola phone brings up 'GPRS data' when something links to it via
bluetooth, rather than, USB cable (that brings 'USB link' in same LCD
space.

so, that 'gprs' screen label appears purely an indication of terminal
connection to the phone; not an indication of net link (as I thought)

'3g' icon lights up to indicate network availability, 'h' only lights up
during data transfer, once traffic stops, 'h' reverts to '3g'

the dslreports/mspeed, not sure how reliable it really is, today, it told
me 5k test file was too small, tried 200k, it told me 200 was 'too small'
tried 400k, gave lousy results

I did some gmaps lookup from Palm, '3g' icon altered to 'h' during data
transfer.

so all's well
