blackberry and squirrelmail

I'm trying to get a shiny new blackberry to connect to a squirrelmail account but not having any luck. I've set up a test account with a password of "a" (to make mistyping less likely), but no luck at all. Obviously I've tested the account on a normal browser and it works fine. The blackberry options say that javascript is enabled, so I assume it is. Has anyone had any luck with this kind of set up? or any suggestions? The shop is utterly clueless. thanks...
