SquirrelMail is a web based front-end to an IMAP service. > I've set up a test account with a password of "a" (to make mistyping less > likely), but no luck at all. That is an incredibly bad idea; just a secure password even for testing purposes. > Obviously I've tested the account on a normal browser and it works fine. Why don't you tell the Blackberry to talk to the same IMAP account as the web front-end? That way you can take advantage of the Blackberry having good email support, and you don't have to fluff about with getting a random HTML email solution running in their web browser.
