3g networks AUS and o/s

I've been asked for advice on 3g access/device for use in Australia and
potentially overseas, I only have a limited hands on experience, mainly in
Syd and Mel, if someone can point me towards useful info, I (and my
friend) will be grateful:

for use in Aus outside of SYD/MEL/etc, is this a reasonable advice:

NextG costs more but has best coverage area (?)

looking at the Telstra prepaid USB device freq., as far as I can tell, it
supports 850 as well 2100, 2100 is what I need for o/seas, yes ?

so, after paying for unlocking, the Telstra 3G USB can be used with o/seas
3G networks ?

is that a workable scenario: buy an overseas prepaid SIM, plug in and use
whilst traveling ?
