vodaphone or three 3g network ?

looks like I need to buy a 'smartphone', and, the cheaper options are
either three or vodaphone, both same price, BUT, apparently, three phones
are on three network, voda, on voda, even though the company is same, they
still run two different networks

so, does anyone has any advice, which one is better for coverage voice and
data, metro sydney
