3 roams onto about four other networks. this means it will work everywhere, but voice will cut out when you switch network. this happens occasionally even in the city. 3 is terrible for data. occasionally really fast, but mostly intermittent and slow. vodafone is variable optus is good telstra is amazing, fast coverage even in some underground train links. vodafone has covered the new chatswood epping link I think, but never tried it. in addition to my phone, I have telstra, 3 and virgin(optus) 3g modems. telstra's the best, followed by virgin and I don't even try 3 anymore. the new telstra plans are really good value and the service is amazing i ported from 3, which i was on for two years, vodafone before that, optus before that. I'm on a $49 business cap with $400 calls and 1.25GB data - that was on a special, they should be able to give you at least 500MB-1GB for that price. all you need to get the business plans is an ABN, which are of course, free and take 10mins to get online, providing you intend to run a business with them... i got an HTC desire on the above as a 24 month contract (they don't network lock them). I didn't like the desire so i sold it and bought an iPhone outright. Apple were able to activate me a microsim in the store and all is working fine to this day.
