I just received a commercial email (from an arborist.. I need some tree work done). It contained 250 characters of useful information, including spaces. The message as sent was 1,133,681 bytes. The excess was a combination of AppleMail generated html and css and a tiff (!) business card the contents of which exactly duplicated the 250 characters mentioned above. My original servers in 1996 were on dialup connection, so maybe I'm overly sensitive to this kind of thing, but is it the internet equivalent of carbon pollution?
