WiFi troubleshooting

I have an old Netgear WGR614v4 unit, I've put 'in service' at home to
extend the range of my home WiFi, and used it with Palm h/held (b), it
always worked with no problems, as long as Palm was within range, it
connected as expected, signal increased and decreased as device moved
closer/further, no issues.

Now that I have a WiFi Atrix (b/g/n) I'm finding real problems with the
phone connecting to the Netgear: the old Palm connects normal, Atrix has
big problems:
scanning/getting ip/scanning/getting ip and so on
Phone indicates signal 'excellent'
eventually, it will connect, at some indeterminate time

any thoughts how to troubleshot it (apart from ditching the old router)?
