iMac/Dlink/DHCP

I have an old iMac OSX 10.5.8 on ethernet to an ADSL modem;
the ethernet on ADSL modem seems to have failed (ethernet LED off)
I've replaced the ADSL modem with an old Dlink 302G flashed with latest
generic Dlink firmware

the Dlink connects OK to iinet, if I hook up an XP, XP gets IP from Dlink
and works fine

when I hookup iMac to ethernet, it doesn't get IP from Dlink DHCP, it get=
s
a '169.254.xx.xx' address;
when I set up iMac manually to 10.1.1.5 address, Safar/Firefox doesn't
open the ADSL on 10.1.1.1

I thought ethernet would just work ?? any idea what's going wrong ?

(ISP is sending a new ADSL modem, I'm just curious why the old Dlink work=

with XP not with Mac ??)
