As I understand it, all the announcements are pertaining to events, or
are on the announcements ML, and sometimes both.

Do you mean syndicate them into a single feed, do duplicate detection
(or, is there a way for drupal events to send a nice email to an
address?), and then hook them into an distributed status update api of
some form (eg ping.fm)?

If we can cut down the number of places the ctte have to post a message,
yet maximise it's broadcast, then that'd be good.

The events already are, in the left-hand menu, right before the search
field. I imagine there'd be a way to do the same for the announcements
ML.
