Hi Patrick, >What sort of data sets are you considering using? The data that is available is via Austlii in RTF format. This needs to be converted to TXT then data to be extracted to whatever format suits. We can only use the cases that are published at the moment but if this project takes off it has a potential to push the government to bring further transparency to they system by releasing all the data. Between 2007 - 2008 77 169 cases went through the Federal Magistrates court alone. Ref http://www.fmc.gov.au/pubs/docs/0708pt3.pdf The current process that I gathering raw data. http://www.complife.com.au/courtstats/index.php?title=Getting_Raw_FMC_Data The goals of the project to to see what interesting trends can be discovered to help improve the Family Court System. Not all judgments are made public but the cases that are published to the public influence future decisions. The sky is the limit as to what trends the public want to find out. I'm only starting small as I have limited resources but if I can get public interest then maybe we can improve the Family court system in Australia with interesting data trends. What I hope to achieve out of this project is to see transparency in the family court system for the public. Ive seen families go through the family court system and it has destroyed their lives or build resentment between parents which can't be good for the children. If parties knew the likely results before they even started litigation then maybe the public will think about their children more before litigating. If you knew that self representation only has a 2% success rate would you self represent? If you knew that most cases cost $30,000 would you start litigation? If transparency is brought to the system, people can make informed decisions as to what is in the best for their children. I hope this helps. The aim of this project is to be community driven so once I get expressed interest then the community can choose what they think is important to them as to what data gets analysed. I'm curious as to what sort of patterns you think may become evident. One that would be really interesting is self-representation by gender, length and outcome (this would likely include such things as care/residency of children, property, assets etc). >From memory the previous Chief Justice of the Supreme Court once commented that self-represented parties had the poorest outcome even given similar circumstances. He was arguing for greater federal funding of legal services. Anyhoo, just curious as to what you're aiming to achieve or are interested in :) Regards, Patrick On 10 January 2011 12:00, <[email protected]> wrote: > Send activities mailing list submissions to > [email protected] > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/activities > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > [email protected] > > You can reach the person managing the list at > [email protected] > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of activities digest..." > > Today's Topics: > > 1.
