WUG 5/23 - JDBC and EJB Using Service Data Objects

Everyone on the JUG list is invited to attend this WebSphere User Group 
meeting, free of charge.

This is going to be a highly technical talk focusing on aspects of this new 
proposed standard for passing data between components or layers, that is 
based on XML datagraphs.  We need good JUG participation to justify holding 
this class of technical talk, because it may not appeal to non-technical users.

Also included in SDO is the ability to automatically transform between its 
XML representation, and plain old Java Objects, like JAXB..

SDO is useful *everywhere* - SOA, Web Services, EJB, MDA, data access, 
BPEL, and more.

Not content with just telling you about the many virtues of SDO, we are 
going to go further and have a detailed presentation by some of the 
architects of the role JDO plays in Data Access Services, which are also 
being standardized, to allow JDBC access, without low level coding.

SDO is far from an IBM-only topic.   The recent JavaOne talk on SDO (JSR 
235) included "SDO in Action" contributions from BEA AquaLogic, IBM, Oracle 
Fusion, SAP NetWeaver,  Xcalia, and Apache Tuscany - in that order.

practical new Java technical contribution..

Main Talk

Data Access Services for JDBC and EJB Using Service Data Objects

SDO is a very attractive XML data graph-based way to implement the Data 
Transfer Object pattern, supporting a change set and XPath 
access.  Implementations are now included in IBM, BEA, and Eclipse servers 
and tools.

Further, it has been used in WebSphere/RAD and Eclipse to implement tooling 
that allows you to use JDBC or EJB's without doing the low level coding 
yourself, by using the JDBC and EJB Mediators, also called data access 
services.  Automated generation of code using the session facade and value 
object patterns is possible to produce coarse-grained services based on 
JDBC or local entity EJB's.

Further extensions are planned after WebSphere 6.1 and in the Apache 
Tuscany project

SDO is a key actor in the Service Component Architecture specification of 
BEA Systems, IBM, IONA, Oracle, SAP AG, Siebel Systems, Sybase and Zend.

Distance from Raleigh (17 miles) / Durham (8 miles) / Chapel Hill (12 miles)

 From I-40, take Exit 280 - Davis Drive. At the end of the exit ramp, take 
a right (North) onto Davis Drive. Continue straight on Davis Drive for 
about 0.5 miles. Take a right on Cornwallis road. Go about 1/2 mile, you 
will cross over railroad tracks. At the IBM gate keep to the right.

If the rightmost gate is down,  press on the intercom button and tell the 
remote guard that you are attending the WebSphere User Group meeting, and 
give him your name. He will open the gate for you.

Our IBM host is Greg Ackerman - they may ask for his name.

Go through gate, follow the road around past the first Tivoli Building, 
looking for signs leading to Building 500 or "Software Group." It should be 
the third road on the left.

It can be a little tricky, so please allow some extra time the first time.

You will see a visitors' parking lot. Turn in and park, and walk to the 
Building 500 lobby.   If that parking lot is not accessible, you would need 
to continue on and park behind the building.
