compiling for old browsers

Is it possible to code in Java 1.6 but compile applets for Java 1.3 or  
1.4 (for old browsers that some percent of the population is still  
using)?  If so, how do I set that up in Eclipse.  If not, why?

Where can I find statistics on installed-in-browser java versions  
across the US and world?
