You can setup multiple compilers in Eclipse so it can compile using different versions of the JDK. I use Google Analytics on my sites to tell me what my audience is using... but that's not to say what the whole world is using. My stats say 96% of users have the Java plugin and 97% have flash... but my sites are highly biased toward Java developers... and my stats say 70% of web-browsers are Firefox... and 0.1% are iPhone users. My site stats are probably a bit atypical. I did find this: http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2008/May/java.php ... no dice on which version of Java they have in that 92%...
