For those who haven't updated yet, KDE 3.1 is in Fink Stable.

There are significant changes from the previous release in stable (3.0.7
a.k.a. KDE 3.1 beta1), including a considerable speed boost. A new
binary distribution is imminent; in the meantime, KDE 3.1 final can be
built from source by running 'fink selfupdate-cvs' to get the latest
package definitions, and then running an update-all (if you already have
KDE installed), or installing the packages fresh with 'fink install
bundle-kde' or 'fink install bundle-kde-ssl'.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Things New/Updated In This Release
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are many many many (did I mention many?) changes since the 3.0.7
packages were available, too many to say what all is different, but here
is an overview:

- Updated audio driver. This release includes 2 different audio drivers
for MacOSX. The first (and most stable) is an esound driver, which
uses the esound daemon for playing audio. The second is a CoreAudio
driver which is less resource-intensive than using the esound driver,
but has been known to hard-freeze some users' systems. The esound
driver is recommended, but for some users the CoreAudio driver is
perfectly stable. If you have previously installed KDE, it is
recommended you check the sound settings in the KDE Control Panel to
ensure the esound driver is selected, unless you are certain of what
   you are doing.

- Improvements to the Build System: A number of strange problems in
building on Darwin have been cleaned up, including support for
single module libraries when building with the December tools. The
Fink packages now require Fink 0.12.0 or higher, as well as requiring
   the December 2002 developer tools.

You should also notice a speed boost in startup times in this latest
release. A major libtool bug in the previous KDE packages has been
fixed that reduced, by a large amount, the number of symbols that need
to be looked up on KDE startup.

- Totally Reworked Info Files: I've completely revamped the info files,
including making a bunch of dependencies more explicit, just to be
certain. I've also added help in the package description which says
how to install, uninstall, and enable KDE packages. I've also added
dummy packages that exist only to be depended on, so it's now possible
to remove just one KDE meta-package by removing a single package.
For example, to remove all of the packages from kdenetwork3, you can
now run "sudo apt-get remove kdenetwork3-base".

- Apple X11 Support: 'startkde' now detects if you have Apple's
quartz-wm (from the Apple X11 release), and runs with it instead of
kwin if available. If you don't want to use Apple's window manager,
you can get the old behaviour by putting:

     export KDEWM=kwin

...in your ~/.xinitrc file before the startkde line.

- It's a New KDE Release: Not only have we changed a bunch of stuff in
the darwin-specific portions of the tree, but KDE 3.1 is in nearly all
ways better than the 3.0.7 (3.1 beta1) release previously available.
A ton of bugfixes have gone into these packages, and it's more stable
   and faster.
